My name is Bobby Kahn. I was born in Minneapolis and have lived here my entire life. I am a writer, event promoter, performance artist, cable access television show producer, dance class instructor, and accountant. I used to be afraid to dance but then I became obsessed with funk music in my early 20s and everything changed. For some reason I felt I needed to listen to Parliament/Funkadelic, so I did. It felt that the funk sought me out instead of the other way around. I was chosen.

My creative side was awoken when I joined the cast of the wild cable access television show Freaky Deeky. From there, I started covering the arts for various publications, including City Pages, The Current, and TC Daily Planet (highlights can be found here). We did a live version of Freaky Deeky at Patrick's Cabaret and the Seventh Street Entry at First Avenue in 2010, which led me down the path of live performance.  Over the next few years I curated several shows in venues throughout Minneapolis.

In 2014 and 2015, I was a guest curator at Patrick's Cabaret for a two-night variety show featuring dance, comedy, and music acts. In 2016, I put on two events under the Chosen By The Funk banner: Get Together 7, a dance party at First Avenue (which was co-promoted with Woody McBride), and Minneapolis Sound 2.0, a variety show and dance party that doubled (or tripled?) as a fundraiser for a non profit music school in North Minneapolis.

I am on a mission to keep Minneapolis funky in a post-Prince world. After Prince passed, I sensed a huge hole that needed to be filled, and I felt I should step in and help fill it. I can not fill that hole by myself, but I am going to do everything I can to connect the past to the present and future. I want to invest in the future of the Minneapolis sound, and cultivate local, funky artists by offering them support through writing and giving them opportunities to perform. I want to bring people together to celebrate our musical heritage.

I started Chosen By The Funk shortly after Prince died to help in this endeavor.  If you are interested in the cause, don't hesitate to reach out! Send me an email at rbkahn AT gmail dot com.
